The hot air balloon season usually only runs from April to October, and although this season is almost over, there is still time to get up in the air and experience the wonder and excitement of floating silently through the summer sky, taking in the views below.
The history of the hot air balloon.
Two French brothers Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier developed their version of a hot air balloon in France and demonstrated it publicly on September 19, 1783, making an unmanned flight lasting only 10 minutes. After further experiments with unmanned balloons and flights with animals, the first free flight with human passengers was made a few weeks later, on November 21, 1783.
Today modern hot air balloons utilise their own onboard heat source, this development was pioneered by Ed Yost, during the 1950s; and his work resulted in his first successful flight, on October 22, 1960.
The first modern hot air balloon to be made in the United Kingdom was the Bristol Belle, which was built in 1967.
Today, hot air balloons are used primarily for recreation crafts and pastimes and come in all shapes and sizes, with a number of balloon festivals popping up throughout the UK, and can often be seen floating through the sky on a warm summer evening.
